A Blessing for a New Appetite

Some years ago
I endured a diet
For thirty days
That allowed zero sugar.
Zero.

Not just
No Ben and Jerry’s.
No sweet tea –
It seems everything is
Sugared—
Salad dressing,
Ketchup,
Chips.

Zero sugar for thirty days
And guess what happened?

By the end, a grape tasted like candy
And I lost my craving for chocolate pie.

That’s when I discovered appetites
Can change.

Child of God,
You’re new in Christ,
And there’s an old appetite,
And there’s a new appetite.
I bless you to feed the new appetite
Until you find no taste for the old.
