J.I. Packer pointed out that,
In order to be friends with a person of exalted status,
That person has to want to be friends with you!

You don’t get to decide to become friends
With the King of England
Or the famous celebrity—
They must decide for you!

The wonder of the Gospel,
Packer concludes,
Is not that you want to know God,
But that He wants to know you!

making friends with you and enlisting you as a colleague
… a partner.” (JI Packer, Knowing God, p. 38)
