I bless you to rid yourself
Of every idol,
That you be shamed
No more.
“Every goldsmith is
Shame by his idols,”
Jeremiah proclaims.
Though they are
“Senseless,
Foolish,
Worthless” (Jer. 10:8),
Idols have this one odd power—
They mock their makers.
The idol of approval
Mocks the one who is rejected.
The idol of riches
Terrorizes the one in financial distress.
The idol of success
Condemns the one who fails.
What you need,
Beloved,
Is not more approval
Or riches
Or success—
What you need
Is assurance that you already
Have approval in Christ,
Every rich spiritual blessing in Him,
And ultimate victory in the Gospel.
May no idol taunt you e’er again.
Shame off you, child of God,
Shame off you!
