Discover something deeper,
More abundant,
More dazzling,
More helpful,
More delightful
About the saving grace of Christ Jesus.

Don’t be perplexed,
Lover of grace,
That Paul said
“Work out your salvation.” (Phil. 2:12)

Assuredly, the former Pharisee
Was making no hint of law-based living
Or self-merited salvation.

There is no invitation to “work toward”
Your salvation.
The opportunity, instead, is to marvel
At how your salvation works!

Maybe God’s saving grace is
Like my smartphone that can do
Four thousand fancy things
And I only know how to do ten of them.
I’d like to know how to work it better!

I bless you to not “work for” your salvation,
But to discover something new
About how the mysterious gift “works”!
