I bless you today to think
About the people who have
Gone before you
Digging the cisterns
From which you now so freely drink.
Oh, it blesses us to remember.
That’s why God said we MUST remember:
“And when the Lord your God brings you into the land
That he swore to your fathers…to give you—
With great and good cities that you did not build …
And cisterns that you did not dig….
Take care lest you forget the Lord,
who brought you out of the land of Egypt,
Out of the house of slavery.” (Dt. 6:10-12)
Israel gets rain during the winter,
But from March to October, it’s dry.
Sometimes, bone dry.
Cisterns aren’t little holes in the back yard—
They are massive, hand chiseled,
Olympic-pool sized, reservoirs in the bedrock,
Capturing the winter rains for the arid summers.
Someone dug one for you and drinking from it!
I bless you to think of them. Oh it blesses us to remember.
