In one African culture,
People do not greet each with “hello;”
Instead, they say:
“I see you.”
Today, I bless you
To see people—to really see them.
To see people as Jesus sees them,
As people, not as objects
Or opportunities
Or obstacles,
But as people,
Made in the image of God,
The masterpiece of creation.
“There are no ordinary people,”
C.S. Lewis famously said
Because no one is a “mere mortal.” (The Weight of Glory, 45.)
May you have Jesus’ eyes
For every person you meet,
Discerning something deeper
About their destiny,
Their truest, highest,
Identity.
And, maybe, instead of “hello,”
You’ll greet a friend or stranger
With a smile and
“I see you.”
