A Blessing for a New Yoke

If you are over-burdened,

Jesus offers His yoke.

His yoke?

Yep.

Isn’t that a heavy wooden beam

With loops for oxen necks?

Sure is.

Isn’t a yoke a symbol of hard farm work?

Certainly.

Why would anyone want a yoke?

Glad you asked.

A “yoke” was a symbol.

In ancient Israel,

Every rabbi had a school of thought—

A way of scripture interpretation,

A view of life,

A mode of living a godly life.

That rabbi’s way of faith and practice

Was called his “yoke.”

Jesus, the greatest rabbi ever,

Invites you to take up His “yoke,”

His way of life and godliness—

It’s the way of grace and joy and peace.

That’s the Savior’s yoke.

I bless you to slip your neck into that yoke

And wear it all day.
