You can have the greatest prayer partner imaginable – Christ Himself!
As we continue to explore a rich variety of ways we can “pray in the Spirit,” we consider today a marvelous avenue to Spirit-infused prayer – praying with Jesus, your prayer partner.
While serving my first church in Durham, NC, I found a lifelong friend and prayer partner in a pastor, Ray. For nearly eight years, we met every week to share our hearts and pray for one another. It was more than nourishing—it was prayer in accord with God’s design. There’s mysterious power in prayer when we have a prayer partner. “Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them” (Matthew 18:19–20, ESV).
Simply put, God has ordained it that partnership in prayer has power. If you can find a faith-filled prayer partner, you’ve found a precious jewel. Here’s a remarkable invitation: Jesus can be your perfect prayer partner.
In Romans 8, Paul first assures that “the Spirit himself intercedes for us” (v.26) and then, as he approaches the crescendo of grace, lifts us to Jesus, “at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us” (v.34). We’re told plainly in Hebrews: “Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25, ESV).
Jesus is your intercessor.
Earthly prayer partners are important, but you also have a heavenly partner in prayer. Christ lives to pray for you. You have an advocate Who wants better for you than you could ever want yourself. You have an Intercessor Who loves infinitely and has made it possible for you to receive every spiritual blessing. Here’s one of the greatest sources of power for your prayer life – see Jesus praying for you and join Him! Make Jesus your principle prayer partner. You aren’t just praying to Jesus, you are praying with Him. And that’s the Gospel!
